One Day (2024)

Netflix getting in touch about creating a series of David Nicholl's bestselling novel One Day seemed entirely natural and almost expected given the subject of the story - a romance that builds over 20 years in which we catch up with our characters on the same day each year. We had to remember that this was a different project to the feature film version that filmed here in 2010, with a different look and feel and actively seeking different locations to Lone Scherfig. We jumped in wholeheartedly to support the Netflix team with their quest, help them find suitable places to film and coordinate services to streamline the shoot.

The beginning of the story takes place in Edinburgh, and the Netflix team wanted to lock that in. The graduation party takes place in the University of Edinburgh, in the Old College quadrangle (which looks like an amazing place for a party, though filming is noticeably quieter and more considerate of neighbours than a real graduation party is likely to be!). Location spotters can also look out for the Grassmarket and the Vennel steps and its terrific view over to Edinburgh Castle, Arthurs Seat with its amazing cityscapes, Edinburgh's New Town, West End, and Viewforth in the neighbourhood of Bruntsfield.

Filming took place over a fortnight in July 2022, with several weeks of prep ahead of filming during which the production team contacted all residents and businesses who might be impacted by the filming so that any concerns or queries could be dealt with.
