Edinburgh: the Athens of the North, Auld Reekie, Scotland's capital city, a city of two halves, home to two UNESCO world heritage sites. In the city centre the medieval Old Town is full of cobbled streets and dark alleyways (closes), while the Georgian New Town on the north side of Princes Street Gardens is grand and open. Residential 'villages' surround the city centre showcasing architecture from across the centuries.
