Where is New Asgard?
In 2017 Marvel landed in the Edinburgh city region to film Avengers: Infinity War. At the same time, they quietly slipped into the Scottish Borders to film scenes for Endgame.
Thor is living in a quaint settlement called New Asgard, five years after his crushing defeat at the climax of Avengers: Infinity War. The location is depicted as a fishing village with a picturesque harbour that lies amid rolling hills. That village is St Abb's.
St Abb's is a small village with one road in and one road out, while the Avengers machine is very large, comprising a unit of up to 100 lorries, trucks and cranes, and hundreds of crew. Just beyond the village lies St Abb's Head, a nature reserve managed by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS). The production worked closely with the villagers and NTS for several months ahead of filming, to make sure everyone was on board with their proposed activity and with the village's twinning as New Asgard.
During filming, much of the village was locked off for safety, though resident access was maintained throughout. Such was the scale of the production that even just to get the vehicles and equipment in to the village Scottish Borders Council had to temporarily close the road through Coldingham Village.
Together the villagers and agencies involved managed to keep the filming out of the public eye, which helped ensure that filming could be completed on time and on budget and won the admiration of the production team.
