While blockbuster features films like Avengers: Infinity War and Outlaw King get all the press, filming of factual programming made up 35% of the total filming in the Edinburgh city-region during 2017 and can reach up to 10m viewers. We take a look at some of the recently shown and upcoming docs & factual entertainment shows filmed here.

Don’t let the dry title to put you off, The Secret Life of Landfill is a fascinating insight into the history of rubbish and how what we throw away tells us about the way we live our lives. Dr George McGavin and Dr Zoe Laughlin spent three days carrying out tests all over some the UK’s largest landfill sites, including their home base in Dunbar, East Lothian. As part of Zoe Ball’s new show every Saturday and Sunday morning on ITV, Zoe Ball’s Book Club looked at 10 different books over the summer. Each week a special film from the author tells the story of the chosen book. The sixth book reviewed was I am, I am, I am by Maggie O’Farrell. This non-fiction book features North Berwick Harbour where Maggie often went as a teenager and the surrounding areas. North Berwick Law and the surrounding areas also appear in the film which you can view here.

Some of the regular favourites that featured the Edinburgh city-region have included; Fake or Fortune (4.08m viewers), The One Show (2.99m), Great British Menu (1.89m) and Bargain Hunt (2.01m).

The production filmed throughout the city, including the National Museum of Scotland. The Walking Dead star and motorcycle enthusiast Norman Reedus rides his hit show abroad for season 3. While previous seasons have seen Reedus and special guests travel across the United States exploring local biker culture, Reedus spent some time filming here in Edinburgh including Arthur’s Seat and Royal Mile, to sample the food, history and of course culture of the city.

Death by Magic | A Smith & Co for Netflix

In this Netlix Original, Magician Drummond Money-Coutts (aka DMC) travels the globe sharing his infectious love of magic and attempting tricks that proved fatal to other magicians. The production spent over a week in Edinburgh in early 2018. Expect Mary Kings Close to feature as well as a big trick in Greyfriar's Kirkyard.
