Belgravia

John Alexander - 2020

"Filming in Edinburgh was a joy from day 1 of the scout to the last day of strike. I wish all cities were as film friendly and as Edinburgh! I can’t wait to bring another project back there soon! Rosie and her team at Film Edinburgh were a pleasure to work with."
Mark Ellis, Supervising Location Manager
Belgravia

Julian Fellowes new period drama Belgravia is a "story of secrets and dishonour amongst the upper echelon of London society in the 19th Century". The series stars Tamsin Greig, Harriet Walter, Alice Eve and Philip Glenister.

We were fortunate enough to be able to attract Carnival Films to shoot some of the series here in the Edinburgh city region in the summer of 2019. Keen eyes will spot:

Moray Place in Edinburgh's historic New Town standing in for Belgrave Square, including the outside of Brockenhurst House and the Trenchard's House. The filmmakers were astonished by how alike Moray Place was to the Belgrave Square of the early 19th century, with few changes needed other than the colour tone of the stone, and a few porticos - both rather amazingly added in post production.

Edinburgh's City Chambers as the Albany Hotel;

Parliament Square as Bishopsgate and other London city streets.

Meanwhile, a great deal of the drama inside the Trenchard home as well as Brockenhurst House was filmed at Manderston near Duns in the Scottish Borders. Very notably, the 'downstairs' staff quarters at Brockenhurst House were located at Manderston.

And Hopetoun at South Queensferry provided interior locations from 1815, the ball on the night before the battle as well as interiors of the Trenchard's house.

At the time of filming, producer Colin Wratten (Killing Eve) said:

Edinburgh is an extremely film-friendly city, which provides the perfect backdrop to Julian Fellowes’ story of 19th-century society, against which intrigue and dynastic power struggles play out. In addition to our central Edinburgh locations, we have the privilege of using the majestic stately homes of Hopetoun and Manderston, which will become key characters in this fantastic event series.

Belgravia was released March 2020.
